Updated guidance on spotting HMRC scammers

HMRC has updated their list of examples of websites, emails, letters, text messages, WhatsApp messages and phone calls used by scammers and fraudsters to obtain an individual’s personal information.

The guidance can be used to help you decide if a contact from HMRC is genuine and provides examples of the different methods that fraudsters use to get individuals to disclose personal information.

It also includes information about how to recognise genuine contact from HMRC, and how to tell when an email is phishing/bogus.

Oscar Wingham commented, “It is important to remain vigilant and stay up-to-date with the new techniques used by scammers. This latest guidance from HMRC helps you to do this.”

“One key thing to remember is that you will never get an email, text message, call or voicemail from HMRC which tells you about a tax rebate or penalty or asks for your personal or payment information.”

What to do if you receive a scam email

  • DO NOT click on any links in the email
  • DO NOT supply any personal information
  • DO NOT reply to the email or attempt to contact the senders
  • DO NOT supply any information on the bogus website if you have clicked a link in the email
  • DO NOT open any attachments on the email
  • REPORT any scam HMRC emails such as those offering a tax refund or requesting a specific payment by sending them to phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk.
